How to become a Referee
Are you interested in becoming a United States Soccer Federation (USSF) Certified Referee ? Are you a current Grade 9 USSF Certified Recreational Referee interested in upgrading to Grade 8 ? Do you need to complete the referee training course in order to complete the requirements for your coaching license ? Keep reading, the information you need to know can be found below............ Here’s how it works. Referee clinics are offered through the Ohio North State Referee Committee (OHNSRC) by local Referee Districts. These clinics are held at many locations on various dates throughout the year. Local referee associations sponsor many of the clinics, but a club or organization may also request to sponsor a clinic. The OHNSRC website has the details and information about all clinics being offered in Ohio North. Visit the OHNSRC website Districts page to locate the district closest to you for contact information.
Referees start out as a Recreational Referee (Grade 9). This level permits you to be a referee on recreational games U-14 and below and as an assistant referee on all youth games. The next step is to complete a bridge course to advance to a Grade 8 referee. This Grade 8 level permits you to officiate as a referee or as an assistant in all levels of youth games. Recreational referees may take the bridge course to beome a Grade 8 referee in the same year as the entry level clinic or wait until they are more comfortable and take the course in a subsequent year. Many clinic sponsors will have both entry level clinics and bridge course clinics scheduled so that participants may choose to advance to a Grade 8 referee in their first year. Check the OHNSRC website Upcoming Referee Clinics page to see which clinics are best for you. Special clinics will be offered for coaches enrolled in a coach license class that requires the coach to be a Grade 8 referee to complete the class. Please contact Bill Nest, the State Director of Instruction, for information on these clinics and when they will be offered. Bill can be contacted via email at: soccerbilloh@aol.com .
The Recreational Referee (Grade 9) program was created as a easy entry point for beginning referees. This course has no recommended minimum age requirement (however, it is suggested that new referees be at least 13 years old) and certifies referees to work as a Referee on recreational youth games (under-14 and younger only) and as an Assistant Referee on all youth matches. The Recreational Referee will receive a blue USSF badge. The clinic requires approximately 8 hours of classroom and field time and concludes with a 50 question exam. Go to the OHNSRC website Referee Registration page for more information on how to register for the clinics. Clinic sponsors usually add local clinic fees of up to $20.00. These fees are paid by cash or check at the clinic. The information on the local clinic fees will be found under each clinic on the OHNSRC website Upcoming Referee Clinics . Local referee associations may solicit membership in their association at a novice clinic. Membership in a referee association is not required (but it is recommended referee's become members of their local referee association). Assignors may not give preference to referees based on membership in a local referee association. The USSF has published "Information for New Referees". This publication is a guide on many aspects of what is required for new referees. It is highly recommended that you download and print a copy of this publication and bring it with you to your entry level referee clinic.
The Bridge Course is for Recreational Referees who wish to upgrade to the Referee Grade 8 level. Students must be an existing Recreational Referee to be eligible for this course. Students that successfully complete the Recreational Referee Course may take the Bridge course in the same year. The clinic requires approximately 8 hours of classroom time and concludes with a 100 question exam. There is no additional USSF and State fee required for persons that complete the Recreational Referee Clinic and Bridge Course in the same year. Sponsors may charge a clinic fee of up to $20.00 for the Bridge clinic. Persons that were registered as a Grade 9 in previous years may take the Bridge course to upgrade to a Referee Grade 8 and satisfy the hours necessary to recertify for that year. These referees will have to pay USSF and State fees to recertify and upgrade plus any local clinic fees of up to $20.00. Local referee associations may solicit membership in their association at a bridge clinic. Membership in a referee association is not required (but it is recommended referee's become members of their local referee association). Assignors may not give preference to referees based on membership in a local referee association. Check the information on each clinic on the OHNSRC website Upcoming Referee Clinics page to see if there is a local clinic fee for the Bridge clinic.
